Use Developing a Balanced Scorecard to Implement Strategy at St. Elsewhere Hospital to respond to the following:
What problems were being experienced by the Hospice Unit? Did any of these problems seem to be the result of the normal cost management procedures? If so, which ones, and how did the cost management procedures contribute to the problems?
The Hospice Unit is a subunit of the hospital. Should it create it’s scorecard before the overall hospital scorecard is developed, or should it wait until the overall scorecard is developed? Why?
What determines the strategy and objectives a lower-level unit should use when developing its scorecard? Why?
Explain how the hospital’s normal cost management procedures conflicted with the guidance provided by the balanced scorecard. Which method would you prefer to follow? Why?
