Description
Trade agreements existed among United States of America (USA), Canada and Mexico before North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The free trade agreements among the nations provided some level of liberalization in specific sectors. But the nations did not have a combined agreement with each other. Mexico entered Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with U.S due to increasing debts and was facing increased economic crisis. NAFTA was established to make North American region more competitive across the world. It was signed to increase liberalization of trade in many sectors between the three nations, which opened up new opportunities to all the nations mainly Mexico. The critics highlight that it has been having negative impact on American labor market due to job losses, but there has also been increase in the earnings across different sectors. To overcome the impact of NAFTA, US implemented North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC), North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC), which were aimed at addressing the labor and environmental issues, which increased due to increasing trade between the nations.
