Description
The existence and role of sex workers in our societies is as old as civilization itself. There are many countries, which have legalized the profession and there are many more countries where prostitution is banned. There are many other countries too where prostitution is socially allowed but not legalized. The countries which ban prostitution perceive the profession and existence of sex workers in the society as detrimental and a social evil. The countries which have legalized view prostitution as the need of the society and have views on prostitution as a profession that actually curbs violence and unruly behavior thereby helping the society to be a peaceful one. There are many practical problem faced by the sex workers even where prostitution is legalized such as social exclusion, health risks, poverty, illiteracy etc. This essay discusses the problems faced by sex workers in a social construct. The essay also identifies and discusses health risks associated with this group of sex workers. The essay finally makes recommendations from a nursing perspective to improve the health and wellbeing of the group.
