Description
Consulting as existent in today’s form was a direct result of the Industrial Revolution which necessitated innovative solutions to the technical and social challenges presented at the time. It matured in the 20th century with the application of scientific principles. Initially it was restricted to improving the efficiency of factory processes through automation and efficient management of physical resources. However, it was soon realized that the human dimension also has the potential to increase productivity in a way similar to that achieved by efficiencies in shop-floor activities. This evolved considerably and advanced behavioural concepts were applied to create a win – win situation in the enterprises (Clark & Fincham, 2002). However, the basic principle and objectives have remained the same. Although consulting as an identifiably separate function took shape only during the Industrial Revolution, the actual process has been in use since civilization itself (Curnow & Reuvid, 2003). It would be beneficial to investigate such a situation where in early concepts of people management were applied. Therefore, in the below sections we deal with the various issues related to consulting in the construction of the Great Wall of China.
