Emerging evidence suggests poorly managed acute postoperative pain can persist and progress to chronic pain. Although pain management is a multi-disciplinary process, nurses have a unique and distinct opportunity to improve patient outcome in this domain. However, there is strong evidence to suggest nurses rarely provide optimal analgesia for patients.
