Description
Workplace bullying is referred to as an aggressive behavior of an individual towards his/her colleagues at the workplace. According to Bacharach and Lawler (2008) it can take place in verbal, physical or even emotional form. Bullying in the workplace is not a new phenomenon it had been there since long but with the help of media it has got hyped. The causes behind such a behavior can be psychological or even related to one’s personality. It can occur due to status, jealousy, non-satisfaction with the job position held and much more. Basically it has been viewed as a sign of stress. The effects of bullying can range from physical illness to mental impairment whereas in severe cases it may lead to resignation from workplace or even suicides. (Einarsen, 2000)
As the cases of workplace bullying kept increasing media showered light on these aspects and it was after a suicide case that was reported in media that led to the formation of a law for workplace bullying. As a result of that employers were more pressurized to make sure that they are properly discharging their responsibility of providing a safer workplace to their employees. And when the matter revolves around people it is the human resource department who has to take the responsibility (Einarsen, 2000). The effects of bullying are not only limited to the victim but it also affects the organization in which it takes place. It hampers the efficiency and productivity of the employees, their morale is lowered as they feel unsecured.
