Description
The book to be discussed and reviewed is “Discipline and Punish: The birth of the Prison” by the French philosopher Michael Foucault. The original Title of the book is “Surveiller et punir”. It was translated in English by Alan Sheridan. The main argument that the author presents in the book is that prisons were not the only place for principal type of punishment as only because the reformists had humanitarian concerns. In pursuit of his argument he goes back to the history of penalty which was a result of cultural shifts which led to the predominance of the prison by means of power. Foucault said that the disciplines that the new technological powers implement can be traced even in hospitals, school and military barracks. However he later admitted though he had been a bit over enthusiastic in his argument that disciplinary powers conditions society.
