Description
The focus of ethnographic research is culture Ethnographers often work in communities that they are not familiar with (LeComptu, 1999). The aim Lisa Russell study was to understand the reasons behind students’ resistance, particularly family and ethnic backgrounds. She being a first time ethnographer found it little difficult to establish healthy and open communication with the students as well as teachers. The aim of the study was also to understand the relationship and the resistance between the researcher and the researched. The research was about to study the methods and approaches used by the researcher herself in the school setting. A set of ‘difficult’ students was chosen for research. The group of students were about to end their `compulsory education period. The researcher hung around the group during breaks as well as in the classroom. These difficult students were identified by their truancy, low self esteem, negative attitudes towards the school and learning. The researcher hung around this group of difficult pupils to study their mindsets. Selected students were shadowed for a day each. Detailed observations, structured, semi-structured interviews were carried out with the students, class teachers, class leaders etc.
