Description
Many authors have varying points of view on the evolution of the word stress. Some believe that it has been derived from the Latin word “stringere” which means to draw tight. While others, try to associated the evolution of this word to its first appearance in the psychological abstracts. (Cary L. Cooper, 2004)
Hans Selye, who has dedicated forty years in studying stress, defines it as a response of the body when changes occur. He opines that stress is not an event; it is a reaction of body and mind. Stress is often seen in negative light, however this is not necessarily true at all times. Stress can turn into an exciting challenge if a person has a positive outlook and perspective. A person can either fight or flee; however fleeing brings out no solution. Stress can be handled tactfully if a person is willing to put in what is required. (McEvoy, 2004 )
