This paper provides answers to the following questions –
1. The following sustainability strategies/systems and concepts have been suggested as tools to help transform our industry and manufacturing sectors to a more sustainable footing. These strategies are being used to increase efficiency (in the use of energy, water, raw materials, etc), to reduce waste, to improve systems and to reduce the impacts of business and industry on the environment - while still providing the products and services needed by our societies and economies.
a. Factor 4 & Factor 10
b. Closed-loop production
c. Life-cycle analysis
d. Biomimicry
e. Lean Manufacturing (Six Sigma & Kaizen)
f. Natural Capitalism
g. Green Chemistry and Green Engineering
h. Dematerialisation
For each of these strategies, you need to:
a. Provide a brief description of this strategy/concept
b. Provide a brief outline of how this approach can help to make industry/manufacturing more sustainable.
2. There are many areas in which our societies are looking to scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, business & industry, governments to provide the advances/development of technology, the innovation and the scientific breakthroughs to deliver the tools, machinery and infrastructure we need to become a more sustainable world. Some of our priorities include:
Affordable, efficient, low-emissions, renewable electricity generation
Alternative personal transport fuels & public transport systems
Improved recycling systems & strategies
Improved housing design & energy efficiency
Efficient water use and water recycling
Another priority?
You are required to select one of these priorities and provide a brief outline of an example of how a specific scientific break-through or technological development has the potential to move our societies to a more sustainable footing.
